Difficult conditions still demand highest sailing skills at 470 Europeans

470 European Championship - Difficult conditions still demand highest sailing skills at 470 Europeans
BREST, FRANCE-(12-7-2003) A 6 hour wait onshore before the first shots in anger of the final series in the 2003 European Championships here in Brest France.

Once on water the water the 22 female teams in the Gold Girls Group and the 38 men representing over 20 nations had a cruicial decision to make.

The decision was clear ; the right side and less current but less breeze as well, or the left and more current and more breeze.

For those those picked the middle it was going to be a long day, but in the women's fleet the Germans Rothweiler & Leu sailed a beautiful race in picking the Right side and stronger breeze ; from there making every post a winner. Slovakian duo Dekleva & Maucec lead the overall results though tonight with a consistant 3rd today . Russians and Spanish make of the top 3 overall wityh regatta favorite and reigning ISAF sailor of the year Bekatorou & Tsoulfa having another day to forget and laying in 18th overall.

It is always impressive to see 3 World Champions rounding the top mark in the top 4 and today was no exception. Reigning World Champion New Zealanders Cooke & Nicholas looked totally in control in the buiding 10 knot breeze before 1998 World Champion , frenchmen Phillippe & LeBerre took over briefly at the last top mark. SUI 3 Emi Lucas & Simon Brugger split the World Champions with the Ukrains Braslavets & Matienko in 4th place.

The GBR's Nick Rogers still holds 1st overall but with a bad 28th drop race today the pressure is on him to produce in days to come..

Racing continues here tomorrow at 1pm
